One of the things we discussed at the outset of this book is that, while we are always vulnerable to crime, we are more vulnerable at certain times, which fall into three categories. The first is when we act based on ignorance and arrogance. The second is when we are not paying attention to our surroundings. Hopefully, the preceding chapters have reduced those inclinations.

The third is when we are impaired, not just by substance abuse or mental illness, but also by emotions. When we feel lonely, hopeless, or depressed, we are more vulnerable to criminal attack. Just knowing that fact is helpful. But it is also helpful to know how to reduce the periods in our life when we feel lonely, hopeless, or depressed.

Personal success

I recently attended a short speech a very successful businessman gave to a graduating class, and, as it impacts your safety as well as your success, I thought I would repeat the principles of the speech here. I have never before heard such a succinct set of instructions to aid a person’s success. The speaker was talking both about economic success and, more importantly, about leading a fulfilling and enjoyable life.
